چکیده

The surface properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) can be modified by the grafting of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). This was done aiming at the production of new materials suitable for bioapplications. Samples with different monomer concentrations were prepared from LDPE particles by gamma irradiation, following different irradiation protocols, including irradiation in presence and absence of air. The samples were characterized by thermal analysis techniques (DSC and TGA) and by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results obtained show a decrease in the crystallinity of the supporting matrix for copolymers with high yields of grafting. However, the new materials prepared maintain good structural order resulting from the protective effect of polyHEMA grafted onto LDPE backbone. These effects can improve the diffusion of other species deeper inside the matrix and increase the material hydrophilicity. The studies performed made possible the selection of experimental protocols adequate for the production of new copolymeric materials with high grafting yield. These were used in the production of new LDPE films with enhanced hydrophilic properties. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 82.35.Jk; 82.50.Kx; 81.05.Lg; 82.35.Lr

Gamma irradiation induced surface modification of silk fabrics for antibacterial application

Silk fabrics were modified by a treatment of silver nitrate solution (AgNO3) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilizer then exposure to γ-irradiation to create antibacterial properties. Effects of the absorbed dose on treated fabrics were investigated. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were used to confirm the presence of silver nanoparticles (AgNP...

Investigating the changes of electrical characteristics of Bipolar Junction Transistors, before and after gamma irradiation

Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) are active semiconductor devices commonly used for amplification and switching applications. In this study, transistors have been biased to operate in active region and by measuring the electrical characteristics of BJTs, the effect of gamma irradiation on each of these characteristics was investigated before and after the gamma irradiation by 60Co source. In...

Grafting of Acrylamide to Low Density Polyethylene During Melt Processing

Acrylamide was grafted in low density polyethylene during melt processing in the presence of a free radical initiator using a torque rheometer in a closed system. Effects of processing time, acrylamide and benzoyl peroxide concentrations were studied. FTIR studies revealed that the degree of grafting increased by an increase in acrylamide concentration. Maximum grafting was obtained at 7 mi...
